I always understood that the RX-78's core fighter was meant as an escape pod.

Preposterous!  Talk about things that Sunrise/Popy (not Bandai!)
forced on Tomino:

* 20m tall giant robot
* Bright happy colors
* Combination (Core Block)
* Transformation (Core Fighter)

Tomino wanted a 5-12m one-piece suit in military color with no
combination and transformation.  So let's drop G-Armor and redo Gundam
the way Tomino _really_ wanted: with Votoms mechs.
