I always understood that the RX-78's core fighter was meant as an escape
pod.

Well, that's what it ended up being in the Movies, but in the TV show they
made it into more of a multi-use system. The core fighter allowed the Gundam
to combine with the G-Armor in different configurations to form the G-Tank
and G-flyer to make it more "flexible". (And, I suppose to the toy folks,
more cool)
I'm glad they turned it into just a high tech escape pod in the movies - in
the show the way they used it to combine with the G-Armor pieces looked VERY
silly and inflexible!
