That got tried on Voltron once (Go Lion version), and the monster of the week 
(and viewers) suddenly learned the hard way that apparently the mighty robot 
has some sort of energy field that surrounds it during the combine sequence.

:P

Macross got around the problem by having the transformation sequence be fairly 
quick (often done on the fly in the middle of other maneuvers).

But otherwise, it's unfortunately one of those things that's often ignored in 
the interests of ten seconds worth of animation that can be reused in every 
episode.
