It's no secret that Tomino has specific gender roles (boy this one
deserves a huge thread on its own) for male and female characters. So
yes I think female MS pilots and ground troops were as rare as Zaku I.
It's as if women liberation happened sometime between 0079 and 0086.
(probably along with a post-OYW social restructuring?)

Female MS pilots like Aina, Topp and Christina are 90s retocon. Even
then they follow various stereotypes, Topp is so manly she probably
uses men's bathroom, Christina is feminine but her pilot skills suck.
Aina was probably alright in an MS even thought she lost to a Ball,
assuming she defeated Sanders on her own? She looks more comfortable
in an MA, like Sayla. Under Tomino, there are very few female MS
pilots who are sane, skillful and feminine. Emma is a rarity. Oh...
Marvette is a much better example.
It's probably because Tomino doesn't have "soldier" as a role of women. He expected them a bigger role, a motherly role model or as leader as portrayed in Z & V.
