Tomino was a product of his time. I have no trouble with his gender
roles in the original MSG because if you compare it to other animes
featuring women in war situations at the time, his liking for and
understanding of women as *people* comes out clearly. Sure, we don't
see any female mobile suit pilots (there is one woman piloting the
mobile armour Braw Bro IIRC) but how can I gripe about that when he has
determined little Frau herding Amuro and the kids, competent and
composed Mirai piloting White Base, Sayla kicking ass in her Core
Fighter, and Matilda Ajan captaining her own ship? These women are all
wonderful and strong *people* responding admirably under hard
conditions--and some of them are children still.
In contrast, look at Leiji Matsumoto who is so terrified of women that
he shows them as being either unfit for serving on a battleship (Space
Cruiser Yamato, with one token "plucky girl" on board whose role he
can't decide upon) or as remote goddesses who are too lofty for human
interactions (Queen Emeraldas). Compare Matsumoto's giggle tee-hee
fanservice with Tomino's occasional shower scene which are pretty
matter-of-fact.
As far as I'm concerned, Tomino's a *feminist*.
