Actually, that 1980 Roman Album cutaway drawing was the very one to which I was
referring and, yes, I had noted the same things that you did.

What I failed to do here was express clearly what my original misapprehension
was and how seeing this diagram dispelled it.

I had originally thought that the vertically-mounted "squirrel-cage" gravity
block ran side-to-side through the entire beam (width) of the ship and the
dome-like structures on either side were akin to hubcaps covering the motors
that turned the wheel.

What the cutaway revealed that the gravity block is recessed within the interior
and is fully enclosed on all sides, the decks to either side that house the port
and starboard defensive gun batteries and that dome-like structures are, in
fact, gun turrets that also serve as shields for the residents of the gravity
block.

I had previously puzzled by the apparent drastic reduction in size of the
"gravity block" of the Albion as compared to that of the White Base but, once I
realized that the external structures were NOT the sides of the g-block but
rather gun turrets, all became clear. The Albion design had been rationalized
and the external structures rescaled accordingly.

My apologies for any confusion that my earlier imprecise explanation may have
engendered.
