I am a big fan of the "next big thing", but it despairs me to see that
the big commercial hits both in US and JP is One Piece and Naruto.
One Piece doesn't inspire me, but Naruto ain't bad. It's like a more
restrained DBZ with cleaner animation and better story arcs. Granted,
it's not clear what these ninja *do*, as it sure ain't sabotage and
espionage, but eh.
FMA was the next big thing for a while, but did it inspire something
better after that (no I don't mean a sequel)?
FMA was good enough that I don't care. It stands on its own.
Wolf Rain and Samurai Champloo were pale compared to Cowboy Bebop,
IMHO.
Wolf's Rain was weak, but Samurai Champloo was pretty solid IMO. More
upbeat and coherent than Bebop, which was nice. Less buzz, though.
Is there a successor to quaint old Miyazaki? Is GITS starting to
show its age*?
Second Gig didn't help GitS any. I mean, SAC was phenomenal -- solid
plot arcs, good characterization, and a kick-ass finale. But Second
Gig...eh. The characters were less interesting, the plot arcs were
lame, and the fate of the Tachikomas was both unnecessary and
depressing. I've little interest in the show now, as all of the
elements that made the first season so cool are gone.
* - I just saw Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State
Society over the weekend, I enjoyed it personally, but ultimately it's
a title with two colons. Any title with ten words and two colons is
pushing its limits.
Mmmm. It's good to see Togusa getting his due, but I fear it will
wind up being the Kusanagi show just like 2nd Gig did. That might be
okay if she developed a personality, but I'm not holding my breath.
