Being derivative isn't necessarily bad, it's just the way in how 
derivative designs are executed.

I do like many of Wing's & SEED's designs, I just dislike the designs 
with 8 zillion guns, spikes, fins, ETC.

While Gundam is fantasy, I like a moderate amount of practicality mixed 
in with tasteful flashiness.

The problem is that if you change the formula too much than it isn't Gundam.
It isn't so much being derivative as it is being repetitive.  The only
Gundam series in recent years that actually broke the formula was Turn A.
There have been variations in the enemies in other series, but the Gundam
has remained somewhat static.
