The point is I keep bringing it back to reality, where it doesn't
work and thus is the justification for my not liking the Kaempfer.
But the point of bringing up Germany is that it *does* work in
reality. The fact that it has happened in the past means it is
entirely appropriate for an SF story set in the future! Your
rationale for disliking the Kaempfer is at odds with reality.
If you think it's ugly or just don't like it for some reason, fine.
But don't pretend it's any more out of place than any other MS
design, because it's not. The only problem with it is that it was far
too advanced given the MS designs of the era (but who knows, the
Germans had jets for years before they made it to the West, and only
failed to capitalize on them because he was an idiot. Same thing
might have been going on with the tech that gave rise to the Kaempfer).
