Yeah, and it's very much a case of too little, too late, and the
resources would have been much better spent on a more massive force
of proven technology, not diverted from the front lines towards
something that may but most likely will not work.

Of course. But the question isn't "is it wise?" so much as "is it believable?" As Germany shows us, the answer to that is an unqualified "yes." Thus, such projects are entirely appropriate in a fictionalized setting.
