Actually, it's quite a common attitude in Asia in general and Japan in particular. In Japan, there's even a slang expression for still-unmarried women approaching the age of 25: "Christmas cake." Asked why a woman is like a Christmas cake, a Japanese man will smirk, "Nobody wants it after the 25th!"
