I recall that during the December 97 IETF meeting DC someone in a hall BOF made
a joke that the government was preparing to take control of the root from IANA.
That one ran wild and I was hearing it all over the place. Within a day, at
least one AD was fooled into taking it seriously, and told a large Work Group
meeting that Janet Reno was expected to arrive and make the announcement.

Lack of good information in a charged atmosphere leads to rumor mongering.
Understandable perhaps, but not classy.
