Incidentally, similar algorithms were used by UUCP systems to relay mail
to the [IP reachable] Internet, BITNET, CSNET, etc, during the same
time frame. You can read the namedroppers archives from that period
to see what was thought of such algorithms vis-a-vis the developing
DNS. (You will find quite a few imho interesting remarks from Stef
regarding connectivity between the [IP reachable] Internet and other
network organizations.)
