I think we all agree Alternic was an umitigated disaster,
but I cannot recall a time when it did not resolve properly;
I'll give Eugene that.

In fact, then NSI screwed up the com zone, Alternic machines
put it online immediately and Alternic users did't experience
a .COM outage. I download the zones every day myself for insurence.

One can probably argeu the point that relying on *any* root
server is uneccessary; simply make yor own root zone pointing
to the tlds you want. You can't get more robust than this. In
this manner, if all the root servers suddenly faied, you
wouldn't even notice.
