Let's see some statistics.

Let's see some studies comparing the usability of something.tld over
something.2ld.tld, etc., given equal amounts of promotion, advertising,
etc.

My guess is that in cases where something.tld was easier to remember than
something.2ld.tld, it was because something.tld was promoted better.

I know of some universities that offered registrations over the net, who
did fine with theirdivision.university.edu, etc.  That seems like a real
commercial setting to me.
