Greg,

So far as I know, consumers can edit the fields in their network control 
settings for most OSs to direct themselves to any DNS server willing to 
resolve names for them.  So I can use any ISP I please while unbundling DNS 
resolution from the ISP's collection of services.  Doesn't seem to me a 
grand leap to write a quick app that makes the necessary changes so one 
doesn't even have to open control panels.

That said, I still think people would gravitate to the legacy root--indeed, 
despite the choice above, they do.  ...JZ
