When the Starr report ws released on the net, a warning was
issued on NANOG a day or two earlier.
Offering a dangling carrot like free domains is generally going
to result is a very large amount of traffic.
Indeed, for a lark I tried to call up www.registerfree.com
at 9:05. No DNS. I dpeculat this is because their namesevers
were thrashing to death (more than two would have been
a good idea) so I tried the IP address directly. After 5
minutes I got a blank white page, and after a few more
minutes Netscape gave up with a "server not responding"
error.
We're talking serious rsource problems here and it's
no wonder the registry choked.
Ya know, for an idea 4 years ago to make more registries
this is a great example of having all your eggs in
one basket and why that's not such a good idea.
