For what it is worth, you will find a night and day difference if you turn off debugging and put it into production mode.  I had the same results at first and thought the same way.  Before you give up, run it like that.  If you click around InstantSpot you will see that it is not nearly as slow as you are describing.  We use caching and singleton type objects everywhere we can.  In addition, when dealing with large recordsets, we rely more on the OO query recordsets than the Reactor iterators.  reactor is no magic bullet, but by taking those steps and using generally good practice, I think the performance is perfectly fine for many applications.

This was the final straw for me as well--you're taking a *continual*
performance hit for something that once it's built out is pretty
static.
