That was actually going to be my suggestion, sounds like the best solution to
me.

I suggest we try to find a way to do a teleconference with some thing like
GoToMeeting and a call in number with a speaker phone in the meeting room so
those of us who can't attend in person could still participate it the live
meeting. My home automation users group has monthly "webinars" where everyone
goes to the web based teleconference and calls the call in number. Works
pretty well.

This could prevent splintering for a while at least. Just my two cents.

Tom,

I also am a telecommuter. My whole team is in Pennsylvania! And yes, I’m
considering the same things you mentioned with one exception. I would look at
this not like a ‘splintering’, but more like a ‘multiplication’. When groups
grow, they multiply and that keeps them growing. When groups get too large,
some people will stop coming as a result. I’m involved in church ministry and
this is a principle that is considered there and works just the same in the
business world as well.

I also think there will be some who want to attend both, and I think that’s
great! A separate meeting time of the month would definitely be prudent. I
think it would be even appropriate to suggest that initially, we should just
have a 2nd meeting of the DFWCFUG IN Ft. Worth and see what kind of attendance
we get. That would be one way to start in my opinion.

Hi Dave,

Being from the Fort Worth side and driving an hour to each meeting it would be
great if the meetings were closer. However, I am concerned that we would not
be able to maintain the necessary membership levels to keep both groups going
if it splinters into two groups. Also, it has been challenging in the past to
get enough folks to present on interesting topics and splitting that between
two groups could dilute this further.

Given the above, if you think it will work I would be for meeting at a
different time in Fort Worth (maybe third Tuesday?) so that folks could attend
both meetings if they chose. As a telecommuter, meeting in person with you
folks is great social time for me and two meetings in a month would be fine
here.

I’d like to bring up something that no one seems to be saying, but seems
apparent to me. If this is a Dallas/Fort Worth CFUG, why aren’t we finding a
meeting location in the center of both cities? Like Arlington, for example.
It seems to me that if the people from Dallas are the majority, and they always
want the meeting held in Dallas, shouldn’t it be the Dallas CFUG and maybe we
should start a Fort Worth CFUG for those of us on the West side of the
metroplex?

I actually live and work in Arlington, but it takes a lot longer for me to get
to any Dallas meeting place than it would Fort Worth. And yes, I know the
majority are in Dallas, but maybe it’s time we start talking about two separate
meetings, one for fort Worth and another for Dallas?

Maybe we should take a poll of how many people in the group are coming from the
Fort Worth side and how many from the Dallas side. If it’s a large enough
group from Fort Worth, it might warrant having our own meeting over here.

Looking for discussion….

Hi Rob,

That would work great for me being as I live about 20 miles south of Fort Worth
but I imagine the folks from Dallas might not like the drive J May we keep it
in mind if we ever do a Fort Worth side of things meeting?
