The m0n0wall project (http://m0n0.ch/wall/) which was the origin of
pfSense just ended, but is intended for smaller installations. If you look at
the last few days of their mailing list archive I think some were discussing
setting up a quasi-fork to in essence take over the project.
Otherwise I suspect the effort to turn things off in pfSense would far
outweigh any benefit. It seems to me that if DNS resolving is enabled, all
pfSense might need is a LAN interface/IP and a gateway.
