What does the number of users who do or don't have to do with anything?
Isn't the fact that *any* have affirmatively selected something they
like better worth respecting? Why would those who don't care or don't
know be more important? Are most web users not using personal computers,
devices which by design are intended for users to customize as desired
to suit their own personal needs and preferences? If they are, why
should web authors be overriding them?

Says who? What makes you think your opinion matches anyone else's? Is it
imbeciles who know nothing about personalizing personal computers beyond
screensaver and wallpaper selection that you wish to attract and retain
at your web sites? Do you think OS and browser producers purposely
choose default fonts they think everyone will find ugly?
