Not sounding grumpy at all Patrick. Sounding sensible. Semantic class names are good!

I've just revisted the work of a programmer who wouldn't listen to me about this, and has called coding variables $sideSubmenu and $sideRefine, because OF COURSE every client I deal with is always going to want those variables on the side of their web pages, right?! My preference would have been for $searchSubmenu and $searchRefine, and then I wouldn't have to include in my template documentation to others that with they can put these chunks of information anywhere they please.

Cheers,
Helen

I would come up with something that meant something to me and that made sense. "Indent" really wasn't bad, though. In the CSS it would have been written as #description p.indent { } which really is quite telling as to what it is, where it is, and what it's for. Agreed?

Maybe it's philosophical hairsplitting, but "indent" still describes the visual effect you're trying to achieve, rather than being a name describing either the function or a characteristic of the content itself. IMHO "first" falls under that second category (it's an attribute of the content "this is the first of something" in the absence of consistent :first-child support). "indent" however is just the same as class names like "red", "centered", "bold", "big", etc which should really be avoided, as they are relating purely to the presentational aspects and not related to the pure content itself.

Again, IMHO.

P (probably sounding like a grumpy old class name evangelist ;) )
