It's one of the many mistakes in HTML 4.01, which was pointed out in the comments of my article. What HTML 4 refers to as character entities are just entities containing a single character. From an SGML/XML point of view, there is no difference between an entity containing a single character or a string of many, so the term "character entity" is more of a description than a name.
