I think "directory" is the preferred term--"folder" is a bit too Mac-ish for Unixheads. As far as how to treat ./.INBOX goes, how about just ignoring it? Is there any reason to suspect that (a) any legitimate app might create it, or (b) that not having access to it via IMAP is a great hardship? If it's created manually, then the user can just manually rename it to something we can use.
