I upgraded to SquirrelMail 1.4.1, and with over 50 folders, some with more
than 20000 messages in them, the response is very fast.

When opening a 20k message folder (groups/qmail), it takes about 4
seconds. My mail server is a 1.3GHz with 768MB of RAM, and there is lots
of concurrent activity going on.

Previous versions of SquirrelMail were unusable. I can't say, however,
what the reason for this was at this point. What version of SquirrelMail
are you using?

Andy :-)
