Wait what?... I’m on R2 CU4. The download for R2 SP1 is 1 MB. So what you’re
saying is I need to download SP2 for 2012 first, install that THEN upgrade to
R2 SP1? Really?

In the pre-install info it lists some further details:

Things to Know

Upgrading your installation: If you have a System Center 2012 R2 Configuration
Manager installation, you can use the System Center 2012 Configuration Manager
SP2 media to install the latest patches and automatically upgrade to System
Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager SP1.

New installation: Install System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP2 first,
and then install System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager SP1 at the
top-tier site of your hierarchy. Both of these installation files are included
as part of this evaluation.

I see a blog post announcing the new SP is available, but the only link appears
to be to a full eval version. There doesn't appear to be a link to download
just the SP.

For now, SCCM CU is still a CU, a collection of hotfixes. The upcoming service
pack will include everything in CU5 as well as other stuff, namely support for
Win10 and a bunch of feature enhancements (see my session
http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/Ignite/2015/BRK3328 for details on OSD). You
don’t get those with CU5, just bug fixes.

Like Sherry said, it’s easier for most organizations to deploy a CU because
it’s lighter weight, whereas a service pack is a bigger process to validate and
get through change management. We’ll provide documentation on prereqs and all
that at release, but CU5 will not be a prereq.

If your org is really agile and can take the SP right away, awesome, party
down. But if you’ll take a bit to evaluate and plan the upgrade, then apply CU5
to get the bug fixes in play while you work on the SP.

Yes – In the Channel 9 video they say they wanted to remove the situation where
people were instead turning to a separate publishing server..

So fingers crossed, it’ll be just as good after the server pack.

Is this the faster publishing for non-persistent VDI support?

Well this CU5 doesn't include fixes to AppV and other things like they’ve said

Why would they do this? Are we positive they haven't gone the same route as
with exchange 2013 where they call everything Cumulative Updates? I.e. Exchange
2013 sp1 is also called cu4. Just seems really odd to release a SP a week after
a CU, no?

I thought I heard that R2 SP1 was supposed to be released this week? Was that
just CU5?

I think I got my wires crossed.
