Software Update groups aren't distributed in the first place, [update] deployment packages are. If you add an update to an update package, it will automatically be updated on the DPs it is assigned to.
Deployments on an update group apply to all updates within that update group. If an update is added to the update group, then the deployment will apply to it also.
