Michael Espinola Jr (IIRC) discussed these at length once on the list.  The
Drobos he worked with ended up unresponsively eventually.  The only way to
get them to come back online was to restart.  Eventually, that interval
decreased, so the time between reboots became much more frequent.  Drobo
technical support advice was to reboot the devices, no explanation was
provided and I don't think that there was much guidance about when the
problem might be addressed.  Given that I wouldn't trust Drobo with
anything.  And that might be too much.

I ran two Synology units (I believe these were the ones Kurt mentioned) at
my old gig for more than two years, with nary a problem.  At my present
employer I'm planning to implement Synology for shared storage.  I only ran
10 VMs at my old place, and expect to run 10-12 at my new place.
