I think they were coal fired superbikes. The factory teams had tenders that carried the coal and water right on the bike. Boy those things where dangerous. If the boilerman wasn't watching the pressure with an eagle eye the boiler could explode. This is how the great K. C. Jones lost his life at Daytona.
