Although Chris is right about soft solder not having great mechanical
strength, let me assure people that it's use in the Etek doesn't seem to
pose any reliability issues if the motor temperatures are kept down.
Teamworks Karting based in Birmingham in the West Midlands run a fleet of
indoor karts using Etek motors. These things run in shifts all day, seven
days a week. One set on track, the other set drinking current from Zivan NG7
chargers at around 100 amps. They carry four Optima Yellowtops (55Ah) and a
Zapi controller (I think) in a fairly conventional Kart chassis. They're not
far off the weight of some motorcycle conversions and are geared for about
40 mph.
The BVS has had a couple of sessions up there and a good chat to the staff.
They're not having and problems with the motors other than catching brush
wear before it causes damage.
