IF you have the room and the means, try it.  We'll use
you as the reference.  In fact not too long ago on the
evdl, a member used a bunch of ETEKs to propel a VW. 
(Sorry, I dont have pics) So if that can be done so
can your idea.

If they are simple PM DC then you dont have to have a
controller for each but a way to balance them in
parallel.  Or just hook them up and see if they can
take the load without one motor shorting.  Combined
with serial-motor-switching, it should be interesting.
