The concept should be valid and I'm willing to pioneer the use of small motors if no one else has, but I thought for sure given the price someone would have already tried it. Maybe I should look at an eBike forum. Those enthusiasts seem to be more price sensitive and individual motor output is better suited to a bicycle. Try getting a 260v battery pack on a huffy though....

What is the general feedback on the treadmill motors? My DC motor experience is thin, so a more experienced opinion would be great. My feeling is you get what you pay for, so I'm hesitant. For $50-60, they are cheap enough and easy to replace that a failure here or there is no big deal, but it would suck to have them go out every couple of few weeks or to have 3 fail all at once when I gave her a bit of juice to execute a lane change or get up a hill. Here are some examples:

IF you have the room and the means, try it. We'll use
you as the reference. In fact not too long ago on the
evdl, a member used a bunch of ETEKs to propel a VW. (Sorry, I dont have pics) So if that can be done so
can your idea.

If they are simple PM DC then you dont have to have a
controller for each but a way to balance them in
parallel. Or just hook them up and see if they can
take the load without one motor shorting. Combined
with serial-motor-switching, it should be interesting.

I have 2 eteks and a D&D ES-33 that a friend let me
borrow. A single etek fit perfect, but it's pushing a '75 Gold Wing and probably will be underpowered. The pair of eteks fit, but it's real tight and will take a lot of extra work to make it work. The D&D fits too, but is longer than I would like. So any of those options would
work, but are not ideal.

What I'm wondering is... has anyone built a
successful bike using 6 to 9 smaller PM DC motors? The small treadmill 2-3hp ones I've seen look cheap and I doubt they are as strong as they are rated, but would they work if you had enough of them? What are the primary reasons to not use them? And would a separate controller be needed for
each?

Thanks,

Seth
