Bob, 
  It won't make you go any faster but it could make you go quicker.  The top 
speed limitation with EMs is low horsepower because of battery pack and motor 
power limits, not poor gearing.  A bike geared for a top speed of 60mph is 
pretty sluggish getting from 50 to 60 when the motor is spinning at near max 
RPM and isn't pulling tall gearing.  My experiance is that the same bike with a 
fixed gear acceletes pretty well.  I mean not doing wheelies, but will beat a 
car off the line.  
   
  A CVT could improve acceraltion, but for my use I'd rather spend money and 
space trying to get more range.  The CVT efficenty loses and better low speed 
gearing may be a wash, and craming more batteries in the space will certainly 
improve range.  Once we get a high current small light battery, then the CVTs 
may make more sense. 
   
  I don't see why you would want it manually operated.
