I mentioned Sharepoint Designer because solutions/features/site definitions are
very powerful, but also very hard to build & debug. Consider this carefully.

Thanks Dave, I'll definitely take a look.

I'm just beginning to get rather frustrated with the amount of functionality
one actually has control over before being required to either rewrite system
files or deploy custom features in their place.

Regards,

Paul

SharePoint Designer does not edit file system files, it is used for logical
site structure editing, and maintains copies in the database. You do not want
to edit file system files with the limited exception of Web.Config, and some
XML files...it is best to create your own custom files and add them to the file
system. You do not want to edit files in the database directly either. You will
use the SharePoint Object Model or Web Services to add, change or manipulate
files and/or functionality. Most SharePoint dev is now done via Features and
Solution Packages. Check out the Ted Pattison video series at
www.tedpattison.com <http://www.tedpattison.com/> for very good and useful
information. Once you get a handle on that, then check out the msdn
articles...and www.codeplex.com <http://www.codeplex.com/> for samples,
solutions and general guidance.

Sharepoint Designer will be your friend and enemy at the same time.

Subject: [OzMOSS] Possibly the silliest question yet

Having established that most of the MOSS files I want to edit only exist in the
database, I am now making my first foray into this dark world with VS2005.

So, my silliest question yet (#3847) is: how do I connect/browse the site
structure?

Please be gentle. J

Cheers,

Paul
