Also, modifying the database directly puts you into an "unsupported" state as
far as Microsoft Support is concerned. Not a good thing if you need to get them
to help you fix a problem...

Not entirely true, if you know and understand what you are doing and what you
are trying to achieve!...and preferably in a readonly/snapshot query mode.

Not my recommendation though.. I had a scenario where i had to bypass complete
Object model and write SQL Query to achieve the result..

No...do not connect directly to the sharepoint database...use the Object Model
or Web Service...SharePoint databases are not like regular databases...not to
mention they can be touchy.

I should probably add that I have got this far but am unable to determine what
database or server address I should be suing.

Is there a default? I didn't set this site up you see so I'm a little lost.

Having established that most of the MOSS files I want to edit only exist in the
database, I am now making my first foray into this dark world with VS2005.

So, my silliest question yet (#3847) is: how do I connect/browse the site
structure?

Please be gentle. :)

Cheers,

Paul
