It is in changeset 8585 so it should be in the latest Release drop. You just need an attribute called RetainBuild in the Mapping element. Set is to true to have that quality transition set the flag. Set it to false to have that quality clear the flag. Omit the attribute to leave the flag in its current state.

Is that feature in the latest drop (to set the retain build flag) configurable per build quality mapping? The latest build of TFS Deployer should now be able set the Retain Build flag when you deploy a build and clear it when you retire the build. This was poor quality builds get cleaned by the retention policy and our better builds get kept, at least until we retire them. That's where the model of having a separate build definition for release builds has an advantage to a CI build that moves through all environments to production. What I'm thinking is for normal dev builds, keep the last 5. But if the quality has been set to Test or Prod, then keep all. I usually set the CI build retention policy to "Keep Latest Only" for Failed/Partially, and "Keep 3-5 Latest" for Successful builds. Yes - you will lose the test results, and obviously the binaries. Each build is resulting in a 170MB drop folder and with CI this adds up very quickly to multiple GBs per day. Now that our TFS environment is fully virtual this needs closer attention (as the backup/DR strategy is to backup the VM .vhd differencing disk file). Do I lose anything if I purge the drop folder weekly, e.g. test results? Or should I be pushing to get a cheap 500GB/1TB USB2 drive added to the host server that I can map as a physical disk to the TFS VM to store drops on?
