Pam writes: I'm chuckling right now as I just had that discussion with my
classes. We used Wolf Rider in one of our Literature Circles. Well, before
I start Lit. Circles, I have the kids do an extended book pass where they get
to examine and preview all selections that are being offered for Lit. Circles.
It just so happens that I had to scrounge high & low to find enough copies
of Wolf Rider. I purchased several copies that were used (translation =
older hardback copies in good shape for lots less money). The kids wanted
to know why I was allowing them to read several different novels with the same
title and wouldn't I be confused? Uhhhh...no since they are the same novel,
just 3 different covers. It actually allowed for some discussion with the
kids that selected Wolf Rider to discuss why the cover art was so radically
different and what the artist was after on each cover. The "gay" (their
words,
not mine) cover ended up being the cover that fit the novel the best. It
wasn't the cover that would have them selecting the book. The cover that made
most of them originally want to select the novel ended up being the one that
was
judged to be the "lame" cover (started out as "awesome yeeeaaaahhhh" and grew
to be lame).

Who us....judge a book by the cover? Of course we do, so do the kids. It
provided a great opportunity to talk about giving a book a chance though (altho
ugh I'm sure most will continue to judge their books by their covers).
