Hi!

Wow, there are some great ideas out there!

For their summer reading projects, besides a standard issue Readers
Response Journal style email I ask them to send me regarding one book they
choose to read over the summer, my students have additional choices for a
second book of their choice which they present to the class when we come
together in September:
1. Create a visual representation of the book and what it means to you
(painting, collage, drawing, sculpture, etc.).
2. Prepare and perform a dramatic monologue based on the book.
3. Compose and perform if you wish a musical work based on the book.
4. Choreograph and perform a dance based on the book.
5. Pretend you are going to make a movie of the book. Design a movie
poster which shows the choices you made.
6. Write a “chapter after the last.”
7. Write a series of diary entries as if you were one of the characters in
the book.
8. Propose your own personal idea to me and see what I think.

The way I see it, Humanities is about communication, and I want to be
clear from the start that there are lots of different ways to communicate.
I also want to be clear that original student thought is welcomed (this is
why I haven't added various student ideas, like designing a scrapbook,
that have come to me through the years).

Take care,
