I am not a middle school teacher but can offer you my experience as a parent
and as a district coach. My son's wondrous special ed teacher pitched the
idea of doing reading workshops not only with her kiddos (some like my some
with significant cognitive delays, others with more moderate reading
disabilities) but with the high school freshman reading at or below 4th
grade level.

She used Mosaic of Thought, refers to Strategies that Work as her bible and
worked very hard to bring best practices from elementary literacy into being
in an age appropriate way. Her results were fantastic! I have seen the
data and can tell you, it works. My own son is not reading at a higher
level (he has a tested IQ of 48, so anything he is able to do is such a
celebration for us). But I can tell you this, I have seen a marked
improvement in his thinking and reasoning skills across the board!
