Hi! Picking up on this aspect of your email, and building on the good ideas already out there, I would suggest that a small element of "these are different ways people communicate" be included in your reading course so that students can periodically react to what they are reading through different forms, be they artwork, monologue, dance, music, webpages, podcasts, whatever.
