This past year I worked with 7th grade students who were held over, and/or
earned a 1 on the state standardized test.? The AIS program was Read 180 which
worked with students on reading and writing strategies, as well as independent
reading.? They had a computer instructional component to the program where
students were able to read a passage and answer questions.? The program kept a
tally of their work and prorgress.?

Unfortunately, students also were taken away from social studies or science to
take the AIS class 7 to 9 times a week.? Progress was made with 90% of the
students and they passed their ELA test.?

Subject: [LIT] Struggling MIddle School Readers

I just received my schedule for the next school year. I will have three 8th
grade AIS (academic intervention services) classes. These students are the
lowest regular ed readers on the grade level. Class size will be kept small.
These
kids will be missing some of the more fun classes (technology, art etc) to
take this reading course.? I would love to hear how other middle school
teachers

would work with this group.
