In most school districts in WA we are not allowed to give students community
service .....it might harm thier self esteem ....... hmmmmm

I do like the community service idea!
I don't find they always work, but I think you must have consequences and if
etention is something that will deter a certain student, it should be used.
have found cases that WANTED detention, so I usually could figure that out
retty quick and would come up with something else. I do hate giving
etention because it is a waste of my time. I have kept my class that is
ight before lunch a few minutes into lunch if they couldn't get cleaned up
uietly. Can't say that it really worked or didn't work.
I will say that when I do give detention I usually talk to the student or
ave them fill out a reflection sheet. Sometimes talking to the student can
elp a lot. Other times, it's also a waste.
I also hate to send students to the office because they sit there and talk
o their other friends who are in trouble. In some counseling offices, they
ven get to play games. So I usually keep them in class, sometimes sending
hem right outside the door for a little while, until I can speak to them.
alling their parents right there in class also works wonders on a lot of
ids.

I don't see it being valuable. It does nothing to change behavior and I

the same repeat behaviors occurring over and over from the same kids.
Detention to me is a waste of time, students and teachers.

 I like Tena's idea...community service.

Are detentions a worthwhile way of addressing behavior issues?
