FineArt111 and Rita, She hasn't said much about turning responsibility over to the reader, which confuses me. To me, that's the most important part of the reading workshop. She thinks she just doesn't have the time to do that. Instead, she has shown us literature circles, so all the reading is in that context. The teacher chooses the book selection and she brings in supplemental articles, essays, poems, etc. to keep the conversation going. We're reading That Workshop Book, which describes the reading workshop in the upper grades as a place for socratic seminars, literature circles and inquiry learning. Sounds like a regular classroom to me!
I am taking this class because I have to for my certification, but I already have several years of teaching experience. The Atwell-style workshop method has changed my teaching forever, so I most concerned that my fellow colleagues in class will come out not knowing what a true reading workshop looks like. However, I am a little surprised about the comment regarding silent reading. I hate to use the term, but in 'real life' we all read silently and need to master that skill. When does your professor feel we should turn over the responsibility of reading to the individual student? I am very interested in this conversation and I am always open to learning new ideas that will benefit my students. Thank you for sharing with us.
