Hey Pat, I work with 6th graders in Reading and English. Four co-workers and I just returned from a three day professional development training session in the WILSON READING SYSTEM. This reading system specializes in teaching students with dyslexia and any other learning/language based reading disability. People often underestimate the scope of students who fit under the "dyslexic" category. Basically, any student who is not making the progress that they should be making at their grade level/age, the Wilson Reading System will certainly do wonders. (Students with IEP's)
Although I personally do not begin putting the system into practice until next week, a few of my co-workers are already using the system and seeing/seen improvements. Follow the link: http://www.wilsonlanguage.com/ and read up about the system. I suggest you go to one of the professional development seminars as well. I am willing to keep you posted as I begin using the system for myself. Let me know if you have more questions. I am working on the strategies with them and have started with them hearing their inner voice as they read. We are having difficulty with this even with me modeling and doing read alouds with them practicing. How would you approach reading with students like this? My second dilemma is that I have the 8th graders every other day which makes having any kind of continuity nearly impossible. Any ideas how to best structure a class like this?
