I have worked with students like this. I find that most students who
struggle don't hear that voice in their heads. I used a lesson from I Read
It But I Don't Get It by Cris Tovani. Basically, I talk about the voices in
my head- make a joke out of it, chart it. Then I model how I talk back to
the text in my head- a think aloud- and I also write in the margains what I
am thinking or what questions I ask as I read. Then, I have them practice
with a super short piece of text. I have them write their questions as they
read. I tell them to pay attention to the voice in their head. Some get it
right away, but for most it takes practice. Lots of modeling, lots of
reading together and asking/writing down questions, more pratice with them
reading and writing their own questions. Eventually, they do get it, but it
does take a lot of work and a lot of practice.
