Hello Colleagues,
A couple of strategies that I've used (an believe work) in my 6th grade class
to teach comprehension through nonfiction are:
*Jigsaw/Expert Groups - Separate chapter or lesson into smaller sections.
Then place  students in groups.  Assign a section to each group, and have each
student read the section silently.  After a few minutes, have each group
discuss what was read, and have them create a poster that includes: the title
of section, 3 facts, 1 picture, vocabulary word(s), and a sentence that
summarizes the section.  When they are finished, have each group present their
poster to the class.

*Give 1, Get 1 - I use a 3x3 table (on a sheet of paper), and have students
share and receive 1 fact about the section we are reading.  Each fact must be
different, and must be received by a different student.

I know there are many more strategies out there, but I've used these two, and
have seen increased comprehension and an enjoyment for science and social
studies with my students.
