Thank you for sharing your detailed lesson plan. It is great to know
something that works well for you and it sounds like something that would
work well for me too.  I'll be teaching comm arts this year after 9 years
teaching science. I feel comfortable working with nonfiction and I have
planned to use high interest nonfiction throughout the year. I have quite a
collection!

One thing that I have used with short nonfiction selections is something I
call "Most Important Word".  Students, in groups, select what they believe
is the most important word in each paragraph (usually I limit it to around 5
paragraphs). I write the words each group chose on the board and I have
students defend their reasoning for selecting that word.  Lively
conversations ensue and students have always scored well on the content over
the material.
