Some common reasons to automatically connect:

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Date & Time automatic sync
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Software Update
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Quicktime -> Update tab

If Classic is running under
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic
similar software may be running in the Control Panels folder.

Third party applications that are open which have an automatic software
update feature.

Mail or web browser applications that are open may need an automatic connection.
