Expanding upon Rich's list, many many applications routinely call 'home' to check for updates. A number of applications tend to send multicast messages when they start up as a pseudo license management mechanism. In particular, Apple's Mail client makes calls to mac.com; Microsoft's Office suite sends out multicast packets (presumably, it listens for them as well so that if you bring up two copies of the same licensed software on two machines on the same network, they will complain).

Some common reasons to automatically connect:

Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Date & Time automatic sync
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Software Update
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Quicktime -> Update tab

 If Classic is running under
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic
similar software may be running in the Control Panels folder.

Third party applications that are open which have an automatic software
update feature.

Mail or web browser applications that are open may need an automatic connection.
