Port 80 is http, the usual web browsing, etc. The usual basic
ftp port is 21 (tho there can be more involved, even in simple
cases). Curl is command line web file-getting, check the man
page ("man curl" in a terminal window). More info about port
numbers can be found at:
http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers

(It seems from your comment about ISPs and plain domain that
you know about IP-address-holder lookups, but maybe some
readers won't, so while I'm there, here's a basic url for that:
http://www.iana.org/ipaddress/ip-addresses.htm )

Have you tried turning off all sharing and see what happens?

Also about figuring out what's going on, have you tried tcpdump
or similar to see what the packet contents are?

Just from what you say so far, I myself can't think of any good
stuff which would be making happen what you describe.
